How to Install Paint Protection Film (PPF)
1. Preparing Your Slip and Tack Solutions
Before starting the installation, you’ll need two essential solutions:
- Slip Solution (used for positioning the film)
- Tack Solution (used for securing edges and high-tension areas)
Slip Solution Mixture:
- 32 oz (1 quart) of distilled water
- 3-5 mL (a few drops) of baby shampoo (e.g., Johnson’s Baby Shampoo)
👉 Purpose: The slip solution allows the PPF to slide easily on the surface, making adjustments before tacking it down.
Tack Solution Mixture:
- 32 oz (1 quart) of distilled water
- 1-2 oz of isopropyl alcohol (70% or 90%)
👉 Purpose: The tack solution helps the film adhere more aggressively to high-tension areas, ensuring a firm grip where needed.
2. Surface Preparation
- Wash and Decontaminate:
- Use a pH-neutral soap and clay bar treatment to remove contaminants.
- Dry the surface completely before application.
- Clean with Isopropyl Alcohol:
- Wipe down the panel with a microfiber towel and isopropyl alcohol to remove any wax or oils.
3. PPF Installation Process
Step 1: Positioning the Film
- Spray the slip solution generously on both the paint surface and the adhesive side of the film.
- Carefully lay the PPF onto the panel, ensuring full coverage.
- Adjust the film until it aligns correctly with the body panel.
Step 2: Tack Down Anchor Points
- Use the tack solution on key anchor points where the film will be secured first (e.g., edges, emblem cutouts, or corners).
- Spray tack solution under the film in these areas, squeegee out the excess liquid, and press firmly.
Step 3: Stretching the Film (If Needed)
Some areas, such as curved hoods, bumpers, and fenders, may require stretching:
- Hold the PPF firmly and gently stretch it to fit the contours of the vehicle.
- Avoid overstretching, as it can distort the film’s structure.
- Once in place, use tack solution and a squeegee to secure stretched areas.
Step 4: Squeegeeing and Removing Air Bubbles
- Start from the center and work outward to remove trapped liquid and air bubbles.
- Use firm, overlapping strokes with a soft squeegee.
- If bubbles persist, carefully lift the film, apply more slip solution, and reposition it.
Step 5: Final Edge Sealing
- Use tack solution along edges and high-stress areas.
- Press the film down with a microfiber towel or edge-sealing tool.
- Allow 24-48 hours for the film to fully cure.
4. Post-Installation Tips
- Avoid washing the car for at least 48 hours after installation.
- Check for lifting edges within the first 24 hours and press them down if necessary.
- Use PPF-safe products for maintenance to prevent film damage.
